Anything and everything is fodder for
Stewart Lee's humour. Intelligent and sardonic, nothing is too great
or too small - history, nations, dubious celebrity, himself -
everything can be picked clean with the sharpness of the carrion crow
and the charm of the cobra.
Hilarious, bitter, riveting, and relentless, he has a raft of
surprising and comedic achievements: not every comedian can claim to
have interviewed Neil Diamond, dressed Johnny Vegas as a yeti and
co-founded Club Zarathustra and written a show containing - apparently
- more than 8,000 obscenities and had it screened on BBC2. But then
not every comedian has the ability of Stewart Lee. It remains to be
seen, however, if he succeeds in his personal mission to stop himself
turning into Ben Elton, despite having worked almost four years in
musical theatre.
One time comedy cohort of Richard Herring on the cult BBC2 shows
Fist of Fun and This Morning With Richard Not Judy ,
Stewart Lee has also collaborated with some of the best of
contemporary comedy, including Simon Munnery, Johnny Vegas and Lee
Mack. Writing credits are as diverse as his comedy, but include
material for Steve Coogan, the novel, A Perfect Fool ,
co-authorship of Jerry Springer: the Opera (BBC2, 2005) and
episodes of Al Murray - Pub landlord's Time Gentlemen Please
(Sky 1).
'An exo-skeleton comedian, stripping
the joke as if it were an engine, every phrase is beautifully written
and dryly delivered with precision and care.' Edinburgh Evening News
'Stewart Lee is the closest the British comedy scene has to a cult
hero, rarely has cynicism been so charming, intelligence so sexy,
serious concerns so funny... arguably Britain's first post-modern
stand-up comedian...wickedly sharp and precise..' Scotsman
